Black Men Skin Care Tips

Black skin is different than other types of skin and not just in color. It certainly is beautiful! But it also presents its own challenges and so you need to learn how to properly take care of it. Black men skin care information is not something you can easily find, so I hope these black men skin care tips help you get on the right track to a great-looking and healthy skin.

The first thing to learn is very basic, but necessary! You need to determine what type of skin you have. Sure, you have black skin, but there are different tone ranges inside what is considered "black skin," as well as the quality of your skin. The different skin care products out there, will vary in effectiveness according to this.

To help determine your skin type, ask these questions:  Is my skin oily? Is it dry? Does my facial skin get dry only at certain spots? As you discover what your skin is like you can begin to match products to particular problems you may have.

Favor products for sensitive skin, especially if your skin is dry - products with harsh ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid can wreak havoc on certain skin types. When you do try something new on for size, use it sparingly at first.

An issue that bothers many black men is irregular pigmentation. Trying to solve this, many men turn to skin lighteners or bleaching creams. One must take care in using such products. There have been concerns about skin lighteners that contain hydroquionone which has been linked to cancer in lab rats. The FDA does allow creams that contain a 2% concentration or less of hydroquionone, but it is suggested you look for alternatives.

Formulas that combine Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin C and Vitamin E can help even skin tone without altering the skin's natural tone. Products that contain Shea butter have also shown to help with even out skin tones and also moisturize the skin. Arbutin, an extract of Bearberry plant, is another type of skin de-pigmentation and whitening agent used in many Japanese products.

Of course, sunburn and other sun related problems must be dealt with. Sunscreen and protective clothing should be used when you are going to be out in the sun for long periods of time.

By the way, many drugs increase sun sensitivity, making it especially important to apply sunscreen or avoid the sun altogether. Among these medications are birth control pills, antibiotics, acne medicines and cancer drugs. Ask your doctor if your medicine makes the list.

These are basics black men skin care tips. It is important to keep them in mind and be conscious about the health of your skin, the largest organ you have.
