Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation
Besides ingrown hair and razor bumps, the specific skin care issues that affect black men around the
World are hyperpigmentation and the appearance of
dark spots. These pigmentation problems are very common and often appear as
a result of skin damage such as shaving cuts, acne, sun damage and skin burn. Most of these dark
spots will fade away over time, especially if we keep our skin healthy. That the miracle of how are
bodies heal themselves. But in some cases, though, the hyperpigmentation problems can become permanent
unless we do something about them.
Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin, the substance in the body that is responsible for color (pigment). And when large section of the skin darken this condition is called Melasma. Certain conditions, such as pregnancy or Addison's disease (decreased function of the adrenal gland), may cause a greater production of melanin and hyperpigmentation. Exposure to sunlight is a major cause of hyperpigmentation, and will darken already hyperpigmented areas. Inflamation of the skin from simple cuts and scraps, acne, and more serious injuries can also cause darker spots to form.
In order to battle dark spots and hyperpigmentation, we can use
black men skin care products that contain active ingredients proven to be helpful.
These include Kojic Acid and Vitamin C. The use of skin lighteners and bleaching creams has been
extended when trying to balance skin tone, but lately, one of its ingredients, hydroquinone,
has been under the spotlight as it has been found that it is possibly related to cancer and
skin-disfiguring. Look for hydroquinon-free products.
Many skin lightening, bleaching and evening out products are marketed to women, but can work as well with men. Become aware of the women's products and give them a try as needed.
Hydroxy Acid Peels - can increase cell renewal rate and correct hyperpigmentation marks. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are water soluble acids and can help remove hyperpigmentation, while Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are lipid soluble acids and increase the rate of exfoliation, but are not particularly known to remove hyperpigmentation. There are also more expensive skin pigmentation treatments that are considered effective (Kinerase, retinoid, Retin A, Renova, Avita etc).
Additionally, formulas that combine Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin C and Vitamin E can help even skin tone without altering the skin's natural tone. Products that contain Shea butter have also shown to help with even out skin tones and also moisturize the skin. Arbutin, an extract of Bearberry plant, is another type of skin de-pigmentation and whitening agent used in many Japanese products.
Before trying a skin lightening solution, be sure to read the label and ask a qualified dermatologist about any health risks and side effects of using a particular cream. Products that balance skin tone take 5-8 weeks to work and may cause skin irritation with extended use.

One simple method that can help take care of areas of hyperpigmention is simply to use an exfoliation technique. This can be of great help, as this removes the dead cells from the skin's surface. Exfoliation is a traditional part of many healthy skin programs and should be included with any black men skin care as well as other steps like proper cleansing, toning and moisturizing.
Finally, keep in mind that dark spots and hyperpigmentation are better prevented than treated.
So remember to use sunscreen to prevent sun damage on the skin.
A sunscreen with a 15 SPF should be enough to keep you protected in your everyday life.
Also, try to prevent scarring by properly treating razor bump infections and developing a
good shaving technique.

Hypopigmentation is another skin condition, albeit a rarer one, that black men can have. Hypopigmentation is the result of a reduction in melanin production. Often this condition results in Vitiligo where smooth, white patches on the skin appear. In some people, these patches can be all over the body. It is an autoimmune disorder in which the pigment-producing cells are attacked. There is no cure for vitiligo, but there are several treatments, including cosmetic cover-ups, corticosteroid creams, or light treatments.
In my youth, I had a friend who suffered from Vitiligo. His face was black and white and he even had some areas like the palm of the hands that were pink. He always reminded me of Neopolitan ice cream (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream). Truthfully, I was jealous of him - I thought he looked unique and special. But I was probably very naive then and I know he had some hard times because of the mixed coloration of his skin. Still it was from him (in part) that I learned that lesson that despite what the world around me may sometimes say, I am not my skin color. Of course, I do want to look my best and healthy skin looks good...
