About Razor Bumps

The first step in a healthy black men skin care routine is to recognize the problems this type of skin can have. Of major concern for many black men is the appearance of razor bumps. Razor bumps and black men are closely linked because of the nature of their beards - shaving the curly, thick hairs can cause ingrown hairs. Razor bumps then appear as a result of ingrown hair getting infected.

Razor bumps (Pseudofolliculitis barbae) are more frequent on the face and neck, the most common spots were one shaves. But they are not limited to this area of your skin. In fact, razor bumps can develop anywhere you shave - even in the area of your family jewels! They are painful, annoying and need proper skin care to heal them.

One common ingredient that is found in many products that treat razor bumps is Salicylic acid. So you may want to check the label and see if this chemical in included. Salicylic acid helps exfoliate the skin above and around razor bumps, helping to remove the infection and release the ingrown hair. There are many shaving products that contain this ingredient.

Perhaps the most important treatment one should pursue is too prevent razor bumps from forming in the first place. And this is best done by keeping up a good shaving technique...

First of all, if you can, don’t shave every day, especially if you suffer from regular razor bumps. Give your skin about 2-3 days of rest in between close shaves with a blade. Consider the use of an electric razor or beard trimmer for the off days to make sure your facial hair doesn’t get out of control.

Soften your facial hair with warm water. This will help you get a better shave and get rid of razor bumps. This can be done in a number of ways, but here are a couple:  Wait to shave until you’ve taken a shower, or you can get a wash cloth and soak it in hot water and then put it across your face for about 5 minutes before shaving.

Other proper shaving techniques to help eliminate razor bumps are:  Apply shaving cream (a good one) to the skin before shaving and allow the shaving cream to sit on your face for a couple of minutes before shaving - this will soften the skin and hair. Never shave against the grain of your hair - shave in the direction the hair grows. And don’t shave the same area more than twice to get a closer shave. Finally avoid using those razors that have 2, 3, and 4 blades. These blades tend to lift and snap the hair back into place, giving you a closer shave, but causing razor bumps.

Remember that it is important to treat your razor bumps. If left untreated, this infection could get worse leading to scarring, secondary infection, formation of keloid and hyperpigmentation. It all starts with a proper shaving technique and good black men skin care habits.
